NO DEMO - MLB THE SHOW 12
Posted on February 27, 2012 at 03:08 PM.

MLB 12: The Show will not be receiving a pre-release demo. That a major title such as The Show would pass on putting out a demo is surprising – and it appears that the company may have made a deal with Best Buy again, as was the case with MLB 10, as in-store units have been spotted in several locations. That leaves MLB 2K12 to have the demo space to itself. It’s a brilliant opportunity for 2K Sports that may or may not be capitalized on depending on whether consumers find it to be worthy of a purchase.
Not providing a pre-release demo is akin to a movie that isn’t screened for critics. The decision makers feel that they are protecting their interests better by not exposing the product rather than putting it out there to be evaluated. Bad movies are often the ones kept from critics – similar reasoning wouldn’t apply to The Show but SCEA would have their own justification for doing so. It may be that they feel improvements wouldn’t be apparent to consumers in a few innings of gameplay and that it wouldn’t be representative of the product as a whole.
Despite that remember even NBA Elite 11 had a demo come out weeks before release and that killed the reboot – almost every game that wants serious purchase consideration has to put one out regardless of risk involved. The skepticism towards a product that passes on a demo is generally seen as being too great now to avoid. The Show is one of the few, if not the only sports title that would ever try to get around it and survive the PR hit in relatively clean fashion.
In the case of The Show it seems SCEA has so much pride in the product (bordering on arrogance) that they don’t deem it necessary – they expect consumers will buy the product without having the opportunity to try it at home first. That may be true of some, but certainly not everyone, regardless of how well established The Show is as a brand. It’s a questionable decision to make especially after sales fell off last year.
No other series would avoid criticism for not releasing a pre-release demo and The Show shouldn’t either. Its “competitor” – no matter how weak in MLB 2K12 – is putting one out. They aren’t likely to steal any sales but exposure wise 2K12 gets an advantage with those who aren’t clued in on the state of baseball gaming. That’s actually the crowd 2K Sports is playing to this year so they have to be especially pleased with these developments.
((WOULD YOU BUY MLB THE SHOW 12 WITHOUT A DEMO OUT??

I played it at best buy in Pittsburgh today and my impressions are as follows:
1). It looks really good
2). I hate pulse pitching! It doesn't have anything to do that relates to throwing a ball IMO. Its just like 2k classic pitching where the circle would expand and contract but only one time.
3). The animations are really smooth.
4). The commentary is still way behind others games except Madden.
5). swing stick with timing is very nicely done.
6). They need to come up with a pitching mechanic that rivals the other game otherwise to me it really holds this game back. I don't like any of them except the meter and that is getting old now.
7). Slowing down the pitch speed really works this year.
8). AI batters didn't swing at many balls in my 6 innings of play.
9). The presentation has been nicely updated for the most part.
10). Overall it's a really good looking game but it still doesn't pull me in and have that really fun factor. Probably due mostly towards the commentary and pitching mechanics. Oh and no ability to adjust the camera for defense except for the standard views for years now. I love the far view to see the ball in flight from the other game.

Nobody needs a demo. This game is the only choice!

Ehhh, I remember driving to every Wal-Mart within an hour of my house for MLB '09 because nobody had a midnight release and when I finally got it, it was the only game I played for 2 months straight and put in hundreds of hours in to it. For MLB '10 me and my best friend found a Gamestop that wad doing a might night release for a different game and we went to each get a copy of The Show 10, we were the only ones there for it and they didnt even have any at the counter. Once again, it was the only game in my PS3 for months and put a couple hundred hours I to it. For MLB 11...ehh, I ended up getting it a couple weeks after release. I didn't put nearly as much time I to it as it didn't really feel to different to me but it was still my most played game of 2011 but not by much. Unlike previous years however, it didn't make it until the end of the baseball season. I was looking forward to a demo to see if it justifies a purchase since like others have said, even though it's the best out there, it's gotten very stale. With Undisputed 3, Mass Effect 3, and some other games I'm finishing up, I am not feeling any anticipation or urgency to get this and was hoping a demo would build my excitement again. And no, the set up at my local Best Buy either has broken controllers, horrible settings on the TV, or is turned off because the inner city turds come around and create disturbances while hogging the PS3 because they dont have one of their own. Looks like this will be a GameFly rental or a used purchase.

I don't understand how people can call The Show "stale." It's BASEBALL! You can't fundamentally change the game, you can only make improvements to make it better. San Diego Studios does that year in and year out. If you totally change the way the game plays, you have a chance of making a horrible game. The game plays great, what more do you want?

Agreed with the last 2 comments. If you think it's stale you're not much of a baseball fan. The game looks & plays great & easily the most realistic sim of the real game to date. They keep adding all the little things year after year that makes it even better. The game does not need an overhaul. It is what it is.

As far as the demo... don't need it. I've been playing The Show for years & every year they deliver. They've earned my trust enough to buy it with a demo.
